Monitor the temperature of your hay with HAYTECH System

The Winkler farm in Gaggenau-Winkel, Germany, has been run by the Maier family for four generations. Since 2012, Martina Maier has been managing the agricultural operation and the horse boarding facility. They introduced the HAYTECH system to monitor their hay storage.
Situation

Hay produced by the farm for its horses

The Winkler farm primarily produces top-quality horse hay across 120 hectares of meadows. These fields span beyond the farm into areas such as Bad Rotenfels, Kuppenheim-Oberndorf, Selbach, and Gernsbach. Fodder production is largely mechanized, and all hay is immediately stored under cover after baling.

The farm caters to approximately 70 horses, requiring 1200 round bales of first-cut hay, along with 150 bales of second-cut straw and silage grass annually. To safeguard this extensive hay production from fire, monitoring the bale temperatures became essential.

Solution

Protect the risk of post-heating hay bales

Due to the configuration of their operation, hay bales often have wet spots, which increases the risk of post-heating inside the hay bales and thus the risk of spontaneous combustion.

The farm therefore wanted to further automate their process and replace manual measurements as much as possible, for more reliability and safety. In addition, hand thermometers were too inaccurate for them.

Martina Maier purchased 60 HAYTECH probes to monitor a first batch.

Impact

Continuous production control

With HAYTECH, they have found a solution that allows them to keep an eye on the temperature of the hay bales without the need to constantly monitor them.

They can control and track the data at any time via the HAYTECH app and feel more secure because alerts are reliably sent via SMS in the event of high temperatures. This allows them to react quickly

  • Constant monitoring of their production
  • SMS alerts in case of overheating of hay
  • An overview of the HAYTECH app
